    What Does the Posse Do?

The Sheriff’s Posse of Sun City is a community service organization consisting of about 140 volunteers. Although we wear the same uniform and drive a vehicle that looks the same as that of a sworn sheriff’s deputy, we have no enforcement authority. Our presence acts as a “force multiplier” for the Sheriff’s office. There are more trained eyes and ears and more marked police vehicles on the streets of Sun City than just about any other community of this population. Real police officers often tell us that we get to do the things that they would like to do if they had the time.
In 2012, our members volunteered 75,000 hours and drove our 14 vehicles 186,000 miles patrolling the streets of Sun City. We responded with the Sun City Fire Department to 5,118 medical calls and 170 fire calls. We assisted the fire department and Sheriff’s deputies at 530 vehicle accidents.
Family members or concerned neighbors frequently ask us to check on the welfare of a resident. We check with neighbors and all hospitals to determine the status of the subject, and, if necessary, call on the Sheriff’s department to resolve the issue. In 2012, we were involved in 382 of these welfare checks.
We act as a community resource for almost any type of question. Our philosophy is that if you are concerned enough to call us, we are concerned enough to send a patrol car to help you in any way we can. We will jump start a car with a dead battery, remove a dead coyote from your yard, direct traffic at your church rummage sale or a concert at the Sunbowl, and call you in the evening if we notice that you have left your garage door open after dark. In 2012 we handled 15,364 total calls.
The Posse receives no funding from any government entity. Our only source of income comes from the gratitude and generosity of the people of Sun City.
If you would like to know more about our organization, or think you would like to become a part of it, call our office at 623-972-2555, or stop by our headquarters at 10861 Sunland Drive in Sun City. Our website (www.suncityposse.org) contains a wealth of information about who we are and what we do.
