Thank you, Eyes Open! This was going to be my post for today.

    INSTEAD

    • I have a question for readers.
    • You've seen the agenda for the last Board meeting tomorrow at 9 am at the Sundial Auditorium.
    • Do you know what a "Consent Agenda" item is?

Anyone know if a professional videographer is volunteering to document this historic event in our community?

Just to forewarn you, the historical presentations will be pretty darned good. Ben and i are meeting this morning to finalize the program. I'd like to take credit for the quality, but Ben is the genius behind it coming together.

There's two presentations: 4:00 pm and again at 4:45 pm.

Pick me!!(hand waving in the air!!) As in the past....Consent Items aren't discussed and we can't sign up to comment on them. They are voted on without further discussion which is sometimes troublesome to those of us that have questions or comments.

I think Members should be able to comment on the Consent Agenda. This is something that could be brought up at an Exchange. Or a Member could ask a Board member to remove an item from the Consent Agenda. The purpose of the Consent Agenda is to make the meeting go faster.

First of all, this is wrong. This is not the proper place to amend a bylaw. If they want to amend a bylaw they should be using the motion to Amend Something Previously Adopted which requires a "second", is debatable, amendable and requires a 2/3rds vote or a vote of the majority of the entire membership.

Second: Consent Agenda's must first be authorized for use with a special rule of order (RONR 41:32) so technically, the RCSC cannot use a consent agenda and will be in violation of their own parliamentary procedure because they don't have any special rules of order within their documentation!!

If I thought it would do any good I would, but I'll only be attending the meeting as a guest so I have no real authority. Besides, it's not even being presented on the agenda as a motion so it can't be commented on!

And even if they did remove it from the consent agenda I'm afraid they would have no idea how to proceed. And if for some chance they did make it a motion, they would have to waive the second reading to pass it because any unfinished business dies at the end of the year (RONR 49:22) and it would have to be presented again as new motion in January.

Wouldn't it be nice if the board understood their own rules?

There really needs to be organizational changes next year and board training. I've never been involved with any NPO that didn't have structured board orientations and ongoing board training. Plus, regular work sessions. The lack of such board operational structure is apparent. It's a difficult enough job to be a board member when everything is running smoothly and there is good communication. When communication is poor, training doesn't exist and expectations are lacking, dysfunction becomes normalized. New members come on every year - it's like starting over. Maybe 2024 will be different.

All things considered, I give this Board a lot of credit for all they were able to handle this year with everything on their plates and all the curve balls thrown at them. I hope they can all take a holiday breather before regrouping in January. I wish them every success in 2024. It's likely going to be as hectic as 2023. They deserve our support, constructive input and involvement. We all have a vested interest in their success - it's our community. We are the caretakers for future generations. Failure is not an option.

    Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays

Does anyone know if RCSC belongs to any state, regional, or national organization that is devoted to 55+ not for profit communities? If we do, there should be good support for our board through them. It's usually well worth the annual dues to belong to such an organization.

Not to my knowledge. In fact, no "trade organizations" of any kind to my knowledge. At one point the former, former GM was part of an organization (or perhaps it was continuing education) of in-kind general managers and had some interesting connections. As board members we never were privy to any of that so i don't know how closely they mirrored the RCSC. I remember she would occasionally mention things she was told.

Very cool...rainbow trout back in the lake. I know some RCSC members will be delighted by that announcement.

Today's the day and i could not be more pumped. The reopening celebration of Viewpoint lake begins at 3:30 this afternoon. Since the day the lake opened, it has been the one go-to spot in Sun City. So many of our visiting guests have been brought to that scenic setting and left stunned. We'll tickle your interest levels today when Ben Roloff and myself share some of the amazing stories that came with DEVCO moving north of Grand Ave.

We are doing two presentations: The first at 4:00 pm and then repeating it at 4:45 in the Lakeview social halls. Rumor has it there will be ice cream and coffee available. From a purely historical perspective; we know the word free has always provided an amazing stimulus to the turnout.

Great program, Bill and Ben! Nice turnout for the celebration! I am SO glad that my parents chose to retire to Sun City or I might never have ended up here myself.

    Ok
I agree - great program. I didn't have parents that retired here, but numerous friends had relatives that did. That's how we ended up here, and so glad we did.

It truly is amazing how many of us ended up in Sun City because of our parents or relatives.
