Sun City is a City of Volunteers. The Recreational Centers of Sun City as an organization has many volunteers. The 10 standing Committee for one is an important group of individuals from all walks of life and expertise. The Recreation Centers of Sun City Visitor Center is another. We must keep the Visitor Center with active volunteers. It goes to what we advertise. The Recreation Centers of Sun City is not an organization with just a 9 member Board and Management.

The ELECTED all-volunteer Board of the Recreational Centers of Sun City; is an extension of the Members of the Recreational Centers of Sun City. Remember they are elected by the Members of Sun City. It is up to the membership as volunteers to make sure our voices are heard especially at the Board Exchange every 2nd Monday of the Month otherwise 9 elected Board Members will do the Members biding as they see it. Working together as a team is key to keeping Sun City and the Recreational Center of Sun City stay healthy and strong.

The Recreation Centers of Sun City has Articles of Incorporation, By-Laws, and Board Policies. It is up to the Board to make good policy with the help of Members. Management can recommend but it is up to the Board, but not in a vacuum with management, to implement good policy with Member input. So I believe the Board Exchange is the place to make sure Member Voices are heard and where the Member can conduct business alongside the Board because more than NOT motions at the Board meeting end of each month are generally set by then.

Can you imagine if we did not have the Prides another Sun City organization as a volunteer arm of Maricopa County?

Now to my next point; is volunteerism eroding in Sun City? RCSC members; have you volunteered lately and brought a recommendation the Board. The best place is the Board Exchange. Remember any member that can't be there can watch it later online, get informed and recommend a plan of action. We do know what the alternative is.

Thanks Emily. Generally, all-volunteer means unpaid but just in case. I am sure the paid staff at the Visitor Center are capable of answering any questions along with the volunteers. I believe the more facts a person knows the better about Sun City and the Recreational Center. Volunteerism has always been the heart of Sun City. Many that do work could still do a little volunteering and you are so right that most volunteers are "The Silents" like you say.
Volunteering is such a good thing and thank you for doing it.

Ida is spot on; Sun City has changed. The days of people being committed are wholly different from our beginnings. Whether it is societal or culturally based on age (boomers versus greatest generation), things are different. Case in point; in the 1981 election, the RCSC board was livid that only 12,000 members had voted. In 1982 the RCSC mailed ballots out whether to buy the Sun Bowl (at a cost of $2 per year to members) better than half the eligible population returned ballots.

Rather than lament what was, we need ask ourselves if this is the right path for us? If the answer is no, the board can easily begin to work to change the direction. It doesn't happen overnight, but within the next ten year cycle about half the Sun City homes will have new owners. It would take a concerted effort with a strategic plan and measurements to see how we are doing. Don't hold your breath waiting for it.
