I'm curious if any of the rec centers have a steam room, not a dry sauna but steam. I see a few list having a spa so I wonder what spa means.
I think every rec center has a spa and one of them is inside. They are small hot tubs. Don't remember seeing a steam room. Give rec center a call. I'm sure someone one this forum will have a better answer
I have visited all of the Sun City Rec Centers -- there are 7 of them -- Beautiful facilities ! However, I do not recall any steam rooms -- dry or wet ! I am a member of Silver Sneakers -- and the large gym I can go to -- also does not provide a Steam Room... neither did LA Fitness in Peoria. Maybe people who live in this area do not use or request steam rooms ? ?? Not popular here. Call the Rec Centers in Sun City -- to verify your question, Cynthia.
Am disappointed that there are no steam or saunas in any of the rec centers. They are great for skin. I saw sauna in SCW or Grand but I can't remember which.
Not a sauna, steam. Sauna doesn't quite do. The hot moisture is really good for removing thickening skin areas....that's the need
After a trip back east this summer, heat and moisture=humidity.......true, the skin benefited from the trip, but I wouldn't go out of my way to spend a lot of time in anything humid...be it a steam room or an eastern state. But that's just me....I do understand that some like that.
I like both and enjoyed them the most on The Grand Princess where they had them easily accessible to showers and pool so in the evenings after lots of sightseeing, feasting, and watching the shows, unwinding by going to one, shower, swim, then the other, shower, swim, and back again was wonderful. For the debate on sauna and steam, here's a pretty good article, but there's always going to be personal preferences: http://menshealth.intoday.in/story/Whats-better---steam-or-sauna/0/1792.html
I like both but I find steam gets the job done in 5 minutes (skin is sloughed and plumped). Sauna takes a long time to sweat, maybe because of what that article says that the skin tries to hold on to the moisture. For a long time I didn't know about steam and I always used a sauna but once I tried steam I loved it. Where I go sometimes they put fresh eucalyptus leaves on the steam...very nice.
And not the same as living in humid air, after all in the steam room you don't have on many, if any, clothes.
TODAY ! ! record breaking 114 degrees -- I was out at 6 a.m. doing some yard work -- and yes, humidity is also up ! ! so that means SWEATING ! ---Don't need a steam room -- go outdoors and work up that sweat ! ! ! Instant Steam Sauna and a Plus --with the sunshine's Vit D ! !:tranquillity:
You convinced me I want one too. Hey, I'm gonna start a "wish list" thread so we can get it ready for Santa. :xmas:
are the nights cool in Sun City? Usually deserts cool down at night. What about the winter...does it get cool enough for a jacket?
I thought so too, but remember that we are in a sort of a bowl here so when the heat gets in, it stays in and the monsoon humidity helps keep it a-simmering even into the nights. However, even our higher humidity days still don't get you as drippy as you'd get down south or FL. We usually do have a breeze going too, so that helps, but don't expect cool nights during our peak summer months. Yes, you'll be able to break out the jacket during the winter. Last year we had some hard freezes so it was cold enough during consecutive days, or I should say mostly nights, when tender plants and some of the more hardier ones need to be brought in or covered with something. Heck, my yard looked like gypsy laundry day with sheets draped all over. Best to get some of the fabric stuff they sell at hardware shops and have some clothespins or clips to secure them. Air then is nicely crisp and we still get our sunshine so it's not depressing cold days like the ones that go on and on in some areas of the country.
We spent one summer in Sun City and I was surprised how pleasant the evenings were once the sun went down. The temp was in the 90s, but without the sun I enjoyed sitting on the patio reading late at night.
thanks. I was wondering about that. I like to have windows open in the evening and I wondered if I would need the aircon all year all day
You can sit outside in the evening, but the walls of the houses hold the daytime heat, so opening you windows is probably not possible till early morning, if then.
As long as our humidity is low -- our weather is splendid -- even in the hot 100 plus days of summer ! :lemo: There have been many many times when I would get out of one of the Rec Center's Pools -- and actually get goose bumps and get cold -- - even when it was in the 100 degree areas. -- However, once we get that humidity -- going up - - it just gets darn right nasty to be outdoors !... SCJack is correct -- our area is like living in a "bowl" - - hard to get a lot of air circulation....so our heat stays here, as does sometimes our bad air quality ! each:
I keep my air conditioner at 80 during the day, 82 if I am going to be gone for more than 2 hours, and 78 at night. Yesterday evening I had to get out a sweater! These few days below 100 are going to be enjoyed.
