Today, August 16, 2012, is National Rum Day Rum is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from sugarcane byproducts, such as molasses, or directly from sugarcane juice, by a process of fermentation and distillation. The distillate, a clear liquid, is then usually aged in oak barrels. Rum can be referred to in Spanish by descriptors such as ron viejo ("old rum") and ron aƱejo ("aged rum"). Every Christmas I make a Rum Cake that everyone likes.
I'll always remember the first time I was on a cruise that went to Barbados and you could smell molasses in the air. Years ago there was some sort of explosion of a molasses factory or storehouse and the scent still permeated the air. Visiting those Caribbean islands made me a fan of rum and rum products. Your pic shows Bacardi and they give a great tour in Puerto Rico, plus I've always liked the bat symbol. Rumballs are another fav along with rumcake or rum in coffee or rum over ice cream or fruit or.....got a little carried away there!
My son and his wife go to Jamaica every year. Actually, they are leaving tomorrow. He always brings back some rum.
