Any recommendations for a roofer? I looked at SCHOA vendors but there are so many I don't know whom to choose.

My personal experience from last fall. Most everyone is concerned about price and few read or even understand the warranty. If a roofer says the shingles are say a 25 or 30 or 35 year roof does not mean that is the warranty...that is only the length of time that the shingle is expected to possibly resemble what it looked like new. The state mandates that contractors give a two year installation warranty. The manufacturer gives a warranty against faults with the shingle. That warranty usually is a prorated warranty and ONLY covers defects in the shingles. Shingles loosing the sand cover or color is not a defect...as long as the shingle still has it's asphault center then it is still a shingle. If shingles are determined to be defective (very seldom occurs) then the manufacturer will only deliver to your driveway the number of shingles that are defective. If only 1/3 say is defective that is all you will get. You have to pay for the tearoff and reinstall plus all the materials needed for the reinstall. There is only ONE company that I am aware of that will warrant the install and the product for total replacement of the ENTIRE roof plus any water damage to your interior ceilings etc (no one else does) and that company is Home Depot. The cost is higher but you get total satisfaction. This program is not the typical program that is offered when you go into the store...you need to ask for it. The warranty is a special HOME Depot warranty and has nothing to do with the manufacture's warranty. The negative reviews that you might read are not reviews of this special program. Please remember that a large percentage of roofing companies are here today and gone tomorrow while that is not the case with Home Depot. Lowes does not have this program.

Good points G, I'll look into Home Depot too. And thanks SCR & Emily.

I sort of have both. A flat, flat roof over an addition and a low slope main roof that looks like a slope but is technically a flat roof. No attic space. I love mid century modern.

This old thread is curious given since our last bad storm, we've had dozens of roofing companies in SC.

Wouldn’t light gray be a good color though because light colors are more heat reflective.

Still lots of tan shingles going up. I guess gray (or is it grey) is the hot color this year.
