Has anyone used the Dial-A-Ride for those who are ADA certified (walking impairment according to American with Disabilities Act)? I've heard a while back they had Dial-A-Rides for anyone to use, but now have it for only ADA certified users and that a personal taxi or similar vehicle is used to transport ADA certified people. I'm just wondering if anyone has used it and what their thoughts are on the service. Thanks

I haven't used it but I have spent some time on their website. The Sun City Foundation used to give out SCAT tickets to those in need and when it went down it left a hole in our transportation system.

Around the first of the year West Valley Metro began the service again and we've been trying to get our arms around how to use them, how to distribute tickets and what the best mechanism was to insure they got to those needing them. We're still working through that whole thing, but the service is available.

If you scroll down on their site to Sun City and Youngtown you will note their new fair is a flat $4 for a one way ride. They just changed that, it used to be $2 for those covered under the ADA. I also hear there is some concern if the usage increases they are worried they be extended too much and won't be able to take care of all of their customers.

In any event, transportation is still a huge problem in the community and there are no easy answers.

The Northwest Valley Dial-A-Ride is really pretty good and getting better, but a little confusing. Check out this link and feel free to ask me if you have additional questions: http://www.valleymetro.org/service_locations/location/northwest_valley

Valley Metro ADA Certification office can answer questions too: 602 716 2100, select Option 1. They will make arrangements to pick you up and bring you back from their transportation center (for free) where they will access what type of assistance you may need and which vehicles might be best. For example, they have a handy hatchback cab that allows for a wheelchair to easily be rolled up a ramp and secured, so a big van is generally not needed. They will also determine if you can have a Personal Care Attendant ride with you at no additional charge.
In Sun City, people with disabilities (non-ADA) and ADA certified people, and Senior Citizens 65 and over are all able to utilize the service.
