    Looks like we’ll have only 1 supermarket in Sun City.
    And a poor one at best.
    Safeway will probably be replaced with some type of medical facility
    here in Medicare City.

    LOL!! Medicare City! I always said it looks like a giant MOB (Medical Office Building) since all the stores and restaurants left. Owners of UH golf course are broke, Quail is going to be a mess for a while, bid on T-Bird, if accepted will be a giant work in progress for a long time, then whatever will become of the "Donut" building? Guess we can hire tour busses for day trips to grocery shop for those older folks who are not comfortable driving too far.

    I like this news. Never liked Safeway. Piggly Wiggly or their other brand will be an improvement in my opinion.

    If there is a replacement store. The federal regulations (or whatever) that are in motion involve anti-trust issues, which I think need to be looked at pretty closely.

    CT,, the reason Kroger is dumping the stores is because of anti trust issues. Kroger hopes this will allow the merger goes through. I liked my Safeway 9n Olive, inept management but liked the store. The stores I will really miss is the one by my SO on N 7th street. Huge store great selections and management that doesn’t have their head up their posteriors. I worked in supermarkets for six years in every department one time or another spending five years in meat department.

    The whole point of Kroger doing this IS the anti-trust issues.

    When I am in Sun City, I save a lot of money shopping at Safeway using the weekly ads and their app. I hate to see them close.

    I heard there is an east coast chain ready to swoop in and purchase these closing stores.

    That would probably be C&S Wholesale Grocers, which I was surprised to learn is the eighth-largest privately held company in the United States, as listed by Forbes.

    The stores aren't closing. Both companies have made statements on this. The employees will stay. The unions will stay. Top Safeway management will be moving to C&S to run the stores.

    Does this info come from a reliable news source or is it just a 'gut feeling'?

    Publised news

    Statements from the company and local news stories in affected states.

    They aren't spending almost 3 billion to buy stores they have no intention of running. I think its 574 stores in the deal.

    Link please.

    It is not published news. Here is the public news. It is still a big IF. Ya know I was called a liar among many other nasty things on this platform but you post an "I think" and all is good. All you BP sycophants are freaking amazing.

    What this means for Safeway and Albertsons stores in Arizona
    The sale has not yet been approved. So for your local stores, nothing is changing — yet. But if and when the sale does go through, your neighborhood likely won't lose a grocery store.

    One of the often used lines in large mergers such as this one is;
    "Lower Customer Prices".
    In the link above it states;
    "Customers will benefit from lower prices and more choices following the merger close. Kroger committed to investing $500 million to begin lowering prices day one post-close, and an additional $1.3 billion to improve Albertsons Cos.' stores."
    Can anyone list 3 large scale mergers that resulted in lower consumer prices?

    Their plans were reported. Of course it's still a big IF! All the news is IF the sale is approved. How could you miss that part? My "I think" was the number of stores involved. I was off by a couple.
