Hello, I will be visiting Sun City for the first time in February for 4 days to check out SC as a possible retirement destination. Any must see places I should visit? What kind of weather can I expect from Feb. 20-24? Are open houses held daily in SC or only on the weekends, as I might like to see what homes are like in SC other than in photos. I don't know a lot about scorpions...are they a big problem in SC? Thanks for all the information. I will probably post more questions as I think of them.

I can't speak for all of SC, but I haven't seen a scorpion in Phase1 in the nearly 20 years I've been around, neighbor's been here 30 and not seen one either. I don't know why. They were common in the other parts of the valley I've lived so we always sprayed the outside perimeter and window/door frames monthly.

Hi I would download all realestate apps as you will be able to see floor plans and updates of different homes. The museum or visitors center also have floor plans on file. I think I watched every YouTube video on sun City that I could find and that was super helpful.

search RCSC, or Sun City.org...at the bottom of the home page there will be videos and Sun Views. Sun Views is a monthly publication. Check out the clubs, financial statement, as well as what is happening in the community.

I have never seen a scorpion in SC. Always wondered why.

Several brokers have the floor plans on their web site but understand that many of the homes have been remodeled and expanded. Some dramatically.

Hello, and thank you for considering Sun City. We all know you will not be disappointed. May I suggest you find a "buyers agent" realtor to work with? Right now the market is hotter than a firecracker, then in the early winter months, it really explodes. Many open houses which are advertised very rarely make it to the "open house" date. Most things worth living in are sold within days of listing, or even before the listing is official on the MLS. A good agent can fetter out your wants, needs, and desires, and have something lined up for you to view once you get to the valley.

Have not seen any scorpions in the Sun City area since living here. They frequent areas where recent building has occurred within fruit groves, as they use the trees for nesting sites. Since Sun City has not had groves for over 40 years, I suspect it would be safe to say seeing a scorpion is not very likely.

Good luck house hunting and enjoy your stay in Sun City. It truly is a remarkable place to live.

    Schaumburger1....
A low pressure realtor with Sun City experience is a must. PM me and I will give you information about the realtor we used. She has been selling in SC for 28 years, we got her name from someone here. We bought while we were still in Seattle and she did an incredible job for us in getting a wonderful home.

Hey S1, welcome to the site and to the community. Lots of good information above and hundreds of archived links here with tons of information. Clearly the best way to experience Sun City is in person, but the more you know before you come the better. The members on this site are well versed in the community and all questions are good ones. February is gorgeous, especially compared to almost everywhere else in the country. Open houses are held all week long, as for many of us, every day is Saturday or Sunday.

Scorpions are best roasted on the grill...nah, just kidding...boiled are better.

You know that there not a lot of scorpions in Sun City. The rattlesnakes have eaten most of them !

Too funny A560. There's always those horror stories of moving to the desert, and most of them are just that, stories. Yup, go out into the desert and you'll run into any number of creatures, their natural habitat. Truth is in Sun City the bulk of our fears centers around the occasional cockroach and the coyotes wandering about. The coyotes don't bother people, but if you have a small dog, stay close and vigilant.

Thank you to all who answered my questions. I'm glad to know that scorpions are not frequently seen in Sun City. Hopefully I will be able to get to a few open houses while I'm visiting. I will have to check out the visitor's center. Property taxes are so low in SC if the figures quoted in the real estate listings on line are accurate. For SC homes in my price range the property taxes are less than half of what I am paying here in suburban Chicago.

I looked up a javelina...definitely don't have any of those up here in Chicagoland. But surprisingly suburban Chicago has it's share of coyotes. Residents report suburban Chicago coyote sightings on a regular basis on Facebook.

Do most Sun City residents own golf carts? Are there dedicated golf cart paths/trails in SC, or do the golf carts share the road with automobiles?

Property taxes are low in SC because there are no schools. That isn't always true in newer senior communities. Golf carts use the streets, and are licensed as such. They are a great way to get around. I always try to use my bike or golf cart, car only when necessary. Many stores, restaurants and all rec centers have golf cart parking.

Javelinas are occasionally sighted, coyotes are common and are only a problem if you have small pets.

    Hope this helps.

(BTW I lived in Geneva, SW of Schaumburg , on the Fox River. Worked in Oak Brook.)

fixj, I was in Geneva just last month for a friend's father's funeral. It's quite a pretty town. The teachers in the Geneva school district have been on strike for the past 5 days, not that it matters much to you any longer. I worked for many years for a company in Schaumburg with a great 20 minute commute. My work commute now is much longer from Schaumburg to Northbrook. I'm betting you don't miss the high Chicagoland and Illinois taxes, which are a major consideration for me in selecting a home in my golden years.

Geneva's attraction to me was what it didn't have; chain stores, fast food, neon signs.

Instead, great restaurants, architecture including two Frank Lloyd Wright's, a shopping area that drew tourism, an express commuter train into " the loop", locally owned stores and businesses.

    An urban village.

We should like start a pool on how many times O'Hare and Midway will be shut down this winter due to crappy weather.

Loved your answer by the way fix, seems to me Minnesota almost always got the front or tail end of what you guys got. Do not miss those days one iota.
