This morning (Monday, June 10) at 9 am is the board member/exchange in the Lakeview social halls. I'm delighted with the new format with President Brasher introducing all of the board and staff and encouraging an open and engaging discussion on all topics Sun City. We've seen more residents coming forward with their thoughts, concerns and interests, all of which is a plus for the community. Hope to see you all stop by.
Pretty quiet at the meeting Iman. As we get ready for the 2 month summer break things are winding down. There were two potential board member candidates at the meeting and they took the opportunity to introduce themselves. A couple of changes to board policies were handed out that will be voted on at the June board meeting. The one I like the most is taking away the two year residency to run for the board. As someone pointed out, one can run for the Senate in AZ as long as they live in the state at the point they place their name in nomination. Personally, I would love to see slates of candidates with a half a dozen or more people running for the open spots. I also really like the fact we are going to online voting this year.
Bill, You say things are "winding down" for the 2 month summer break, but that could be a very productive time for some of us year-rounders to chat--any chance of arranging a casual summer exchange?
Something that is cool about this site I discovered is you can actually "Private Message" someone on here if you like... Just click on the top left of the site in subject bar that says "Private Messages". You can easily coordinate plans if you want to talk amoung yourselves on a subject or wanted to exchange info you didn't want everyone else to see... pretty cool I thought!! :cool-new:
Yep, the private message part is a good feature, but I was hoping Bill was gonna throw bread on the waters for "a casual summer exchange" to round up those interested in stuff like the community center concept, brainstorming about getting new residents involved, soliciting input for Foundation projects, upping community spirit, etc.--you know, the things he often writes about. Just thought with the summer lull in commitments from boards and committees, he could tap into some who are usually overcommitted or tease out those who previously haven't come to more formal meetings but like the idea of throwing ideas around and then maybe being steered to appropriate committees or advised about logistics, etc.
That's exactly why I answered in the open forum and not in the pm section. I would love to get together informally with folks who love the community and coffee house chats about the future. I know at least one potential candidate that would enjoy joining us and i'm sure there are several others. July is wide open and i'm pretty flexible.
My husband and I would very much like to join in if we can. This is exciting and Sun City is not the sleepy little development most people think it is. There are many people starting to get excited about its future. I love that this forum is starting to hum now.
I love these posts... I am not in Sun City yet... in a couple years yes and I will join you... I do love that so many people are communicating and can you imagine as the word spreads to all the others in Sun City? Constructive changes will happen because of this site and bringing people together?.. Don't ya think?
Just a note to everyone on the site... If anyone wants "Talk Of Sun City" business cards mailed to your house so you can have them to handout to your friends and residents you meet in Sun City, we have accommodated already many requests and have unlimited business cards. It's an easy way for someone to take it home and go to the site... If anyone wants some, let us know and please email us your name and address at: talkofsuncity@gmail.com Thanks to all of you for the support, Admin
Way cool on the coffee/chat get together in July. Maybe what we will do is set something up for the backroom at the Lakeview bowling alley or perhaps Tailsman Hall and we can bring our own. Let me do some checking to see what works best. As far as promotion admin, have you talked to Paul Herrmann at the Sun City Visitor Center about a link on his site? He averages around 20,000 hits a month. I did a post on 55Places today and left a link for this site. Don't know if they will post it but they are usually pretty good about allowing me leeway in what I post. And I couldn't agree more bmac, this site can begin to open doors to the future of the community. I've long argued that until we bring people together in a more inclusive way, we will never reach our full potential.
Nice! Just checked 55Places and it's up and as I wrote it; here is the link. What's better for collectively minded people than to find common ground and begin building links to a better way to live? In my previous life we called it syncrosinicity.
Good to see and hope it'll steer more folks our way. You mentioned weeding out the crazies--wondering how that is happening here. The mood here is one of exploring possibilities and coming up with creative and helpful commentary whereas NewsZap had become a griping ground and lost a lot of local focus so stopped posting. Is this a misperception?
Hardly scj...it's where the crazies congregate. I think I've now been booted off that site 8 times? Or is it 9?
Enjoyed seeing the 55 places link Bill, but maybe a new thread with that in the title would make it easier for people to find than buried in this thread? BTW, any details firming up in getting the coffee chat brainstorming scheduled?
Good idea scj, i'll get something up tomorrow. Trying to line up a place and have it firmed up by weeks end. I will also get a separate thread going on when and where.
I'm not living in SC yet but plan to in a few years. Have you considered videotaping the general board meetings and posting online? At one time I considered moving to a different Sun City and I watched several meetings they posted on Vimeo. It wasn't a professional-looking job, just a camera on the panel. Wouldn't be difficult to do.
