I thought I was seeing things when I went there the other day. The colors that fit in with the neighborhood, celebrated the desert, and echoed the building are now garish and look like something befitting a playground. Who makes these decisions?
I haven't, but i will be there today at 1:30 for the meet and greet before the 2 pm start for the first candidates forum. I recall the lament when the former former general manager decided to paint the centers something other than the off-white we had lived with forever. The good news was those moaning about were far out numbered by those who loved incorporating desert colors into our landscape. She did a lot of good things and that for sure was one of them. I wonder who made the call; i'll see if i can find out?
Yeah, I'd be interested to know. Wouldn't have been a bad idea to get members involved on some options....
Interesting but my efforts (along with many others) were to stop the RCSC board and general manager from removing the sun dial from existence in 2010. The structural support of the dial had weakened and Jan recommended they remove it rather than fix it. Several of us wrote letters and spoke out of its historical value. The fix wasn't all that expensive and the board realized it was folly to destroy a landmark. Looking at the picture is interesting, but means little to me, sorry. It was during those first years in Jan's tenure where she was aggressively repainting many of our rec center colors to something more colorful and attractive. The other day at the meeting for the candidates i looked at the Sun Dial building and it has some of the same multi-colored layers in the sun dial has, but far less pronounced.
Thank you Rusty. For those who weren't here then, this was a battle that they lost. There was an outcry over this. The new colors allows it to show it's beauty because before you hardly noticed it. Cudos to those who painted it.
Our new General Manager announced it was his decision to, first of all paint it, and he chose the colors. The painting crew was about done with painting the outside of the Sundial building and getting ready to leave. The GM thought that while all the equipment and man-lifts were there, they should also freshen-up and paint the Sundial itself. Once you learn that the colors represent the Arizona State flag I think its easier to accept? Besides, isn't it about time we add some color? We're losing our greenery, going back to desert landscape and everywhere you look, everything is either brown or beige!
So all it takes is someone telling you what you want to hear and then all is hunky dory? The Sundial looks like it represents Ringling Bros circus. Not exactly what I'd call a good reputation for our community. Why was this ok to do without asking the membership? As I recall a golf building had to be repainted because of complaints.
Interesting because i've seen more positive comments than negative about the paint job; for whatever that's worth. Back in the late 2000's the GM started painting all of our stark white buildings the outcry was also there as well. Some of the old-timers hated losing their virginal-dirty white buildings but the general consensus was the new more modern look to desert colors was spectacular. What i liked was the GM could articulate why he had done it. It made sense to me.
Appreciated his three-fold comments right away that included the Sundial paint explanation. Even more welcome was his decision to face the membership while doing so!!
