Don't you just hate acronyms? Thank goodness most of you are smart enough to figure this one out...Sun City Long Range Planning Committee. Yes i did interview for it; must have failed miserably. I'm sure there were countless others who have appeared at the World Futurists Society as presenters. Or, who have rebuilt an organization from the ground up by looking to the future and then implemented those plans. But heck, it's all good. Rather than suggest anything about the committee and their first meeting, i will simply post the minutes from it and let you draw your own conclusions: Chair Bruce Alleman; Co-Chair Jerry Walczak; Committee Members Bill Loslo, Gary Osier, Lynn Lybolt, David Vandernaalt, Peggy Loken RCSC STAFF: None GUESTS: RCSC Board Director Stella Van Ness Report by Bruce Alleman , Chair: The Secretary will be elected at the next meeting on February 19, 2018. The Committee reviewed and edited the 2018 Committee List. So the first thing they will discuss is golf. Are they another all-golf group? Are we informed of their ideas or are these closed door items?
So, this is all of the information available from the LRPC meeting? The meeting took 5 minutes? With all of the needs of this community, and this is how the meeting went? What a shame to finally get the committee reinstated and this is the limit of what we get.
Interesting comments gang; seems we all were underwhelmed by the opening salvo eh? I will hold off judging too critically until we see more of their minute meetings posted online. The good news is these meetings are open to RCSC members, it is only the board's work sessions that are closed to us. Unfortunately i won't be at the member/exchange Monday, in a lawn bowling tournament in Sun City West. It is curious the two items they targeted. The golf maintenance buildings are bit of a sore spot to me. If you check the PIF expenditures, they fall under facilities, not golf. There's any number of oddities like that through-out the budgeting/accounting process. But i will cover that in another thread where we try and decide if in fact "numbers matter." I will leave you with this final thought regarding the LRPC. When interviewed they asked how many people i thought should be on the committee? I tend to be blunt when asked questions like that and said simply: "the number of members is far less important than the actual work structure they adapt." Sitting around talking about what building projects they start on in a year or two is silliness. Ultimately the board decides that; the committee would be far better served studying trends of the coming retirees and the things new communities are doing. But alas, my words obviously fell on deaf ears. Nothing new there though.
It is not unheard of, elsewhere, that citizens for their own committees when they feel that the official channels are not performing, or are not likely to perform, in a needed manner.
The summary of the April 16th LRPC is now posted on the RCSC website. My first question would be just what does the committee believe to be "Long Term Planning"?? The committee seems to be guided toward current projects and then some just 2 years down the road. Is there a new, modified Long Range Plan that is actually 5-10 years in the future? Last month the committee requested some important information and I'm not sure they will get it. The RCSC had provided the figures for club membership but the committee said it was more important to get the numbers for actual club usage. I guess this makes too much sense. There could be a club with 75 members and given dedicated space but only 20 use it on a regular basis. Maybe it will be provided at the next meeting? So often the excuse is that it's hard to gather the information. These figures are much too important to future planning. This really got my attention.....a Chairman of the committee "suggested moving the Lakes Project from the year 2024 to either 2019 or 2020 due to the usage of the course". Well here we go with golf getting priority again. And, how does this fit in with the most recently provided Long Range Plan? South Golf Course Pro Shop/garage re-do, huge makeover of Mountain View and Lakeview were all on the latest LRP schedule. Grand Avenue has been thrown into the mix and we have no idea who's going to get shuffled out of the line up. So what is the latest version of the Long Range Plan???
Pretty pathetic aggie. Seems like not much has changed eh? Here's the latest long range plan from 2016. The whole point of the LRPC in my mind is to make some informed recommendations based on data. But what the heck, putting together stats they need might take some time so far better to just throw darts at what the future holds. Pure freaking nonsense.
This is too depressing when I read it. With one exception, all golf. Nothing we can do about it and the LRPC going right along with it. And to think one point we had an opportunity to buy the Lakes Club. I hope if it EVER comes up again they don't say "too expensive." Considering the amount they are willing to pay for golf (in a non-golfing future) that is not a decent excuse. We need our community living room!

Taimane has been around since she was very young. Don Ho initially made her famous by including her in his performances when she was about 12. She's very accomplished but I'm not as fond of her style for more than one song. She did a TED talk once that was quite grating to watch, IMHO. The other two women are her usual band. She made an album with songs titled for each planet. This one is see is Pluto. Perhaps she made it before Pluto got demoted to a dwarf. On a happier side for SC, whoo hoo, new ladder truck for the fire station. Gotta love a new fire truck. Such a great system that firemen and/or paramedics will come (hopefully) racing your way, sirens blaring, when you really need them.
Did you ever stop and think about the irony of new ladder truck for the fire dept in a community of one level homes? As for the long range planning committee, it looks like it desperately needs a hand in trying to shape it. Imagine putting this esteemed group together and then ask them to go look at metal maintenance barns as one of their tasks. God help us all.
Yes, yes I did, but it's a shorter ladder than the previous one and it get much better mileage. Plus, can't they use it to get on a roof? Some very tall roofs in SC, especially on the churches. And then there is the hospital. And don't forget about the big garage that's still making trouble. Don't be so myopic BP.
Actually there are quite a few structures that would need a ladder truck for emergency service....Banner Boswell, The Fountains, Royal Oaks, etc. The ladder truck can also extend the ladder to reach over a roof for water needed to put out a fire or reach up into tall trees to rescue kitties!
Keep in mind that Sun City Fire responds to other communities (Peoria, El Mirage, Glendale, Surprise) an average of about 350 times per month. Those departments respond to Sun City calls at least as many times. SC Fire and Medical has to be able to handle whatever situation is presented.
Actually the ladder truck issue was the first thing I thought of when I heard about it, though all the "No. no,no, we might need it" folks should have the final say. As for the LRPC, well many of us believe that the gods do not meddle in the affairs of people, so it is up to us to figure these things out without their help.
Tongue in cheek on the ladder truck gang. I get it. Just love the humor that exists in a community of one level homes and a bunch of old farts living in happy unison. Well kind of anyway. It was either our first or second annual membership meeting that went on most of the day when we brought in a comedian who did almost her entire skit on age restricted living. Lord knows there's plenty of material. Regarding the long range planning committee; if they truly want this to benefit the community, they best get their heads around what it is and how it should work. Because the idea of looking at metal sheds for storing golf course equipment might be as far removed from long range planning as i am of being a Trump supporter.
Just noticed this when looking up the description of the Long Range Planning Committee. Is this an accurate description of the committee? Long Range Planning Committee: The Long Range Planning Committee is dedicated to advising the Board of Directors of the Recreation Centers of Sun City, Inc. to aid in maintaining their position of leadership among retirement communities. This is to be accomplished by focusing on the current needs of our Members and through research of the needs and desires of future Members. The Long Range Planning Committee shall provide the Board of Directors of the Recreation Centers of Sun City, Inc. with reports, recommendations, and suggestions regarding the future needs of its Members and a suggested timeframe to implement future facilities and programs to meet those needs. Standing Committees shall not meet in the months of July and August. Other months without meetings can be determined by each committee individually.
