Golf Carts at Sun City--I have Basic Questions

Golf Carts!!! I love them. But here are a couple questions:

    1. Can? I insure my golf cart if I have no car?
I love not having a car where I live now. But in California, I have heard you cannot insure a golf cart unless you also have a car (don't know this for sure, just read it somewhere). Must one have a car in AZ in order to insure a golf cart?

    2. Of COURSE I want electric--seems logical. Am I correct?
I don't go real far, mostly need it for groceries and the hardware store, etc.

    Thank you so much!

Just out of curiosity, why do you want to leave California and go to Arizona?
I left the state of Washington because family lived here.
However, I was born and raised in Long Beach California and liked it there.
    Too expensive now.

We live in the original Sun City AZ and have a gas golf cart. Some communities now only allow electric carts. We insure our cart through Allstate Insurance and they are not the carrier for our automobile insurance. Golf cart insurance is a very reasonable $75 a year and is required by law. You must also have a valid drivers license not necessarily an AZ license. Hope this helps.

We are in the original Sun City.

Yes, you can insure a golf cart without insuring a car.

Gas vs Electric...I'm not up for the debate.
We have an electric golf cart. It's quiet, charges quickly (and cheaply) and gets us where we want to go. It isn't as fast as a gas cart, but I'm retired so what's the hurry?

As has been stated before and correct me if I'm wrong.
You PULL a golf cart. You DRIVE a golf car.

Thanks to all. I appreciate the answers from those who know about these things.

And now, I will weigh in on the "Golf Cart" vs. "Golf Car" question:

The reasons for wanting to own a golf cart revolve around wanting to uncomplicate one's life, be less serious, and drive something that looks fun to drive. Hence, the word "cart." It is perfect. It implies that the driver has already proven that they are an adult, and now wants to have some fun driving a GOLF CART.

Personally, I think they should be called Golf CARTS because they do not look like a car.
Not even a Smart Car. So let's just stick with that idea.

Now what are we going to call those things that are pulled?

All good advice and let me just say, one of the best things about living in Sun City is using my golf car(t) daily. Love the split windshield and dropping it down to get the airflow. I have two standard poodles who truly enjoy standing in the front with their noses out the window as we "race" down the street.

The best deals are on refurbs, as dealers buy golf course cars in bulk (as they turn them over) a couple of years old and they rebuild them and make them street legal (like J_V did). The bigger question is gas or electric? We have one of each now. Prefer the electric but with as much as i use mine, the gas makes more sense for me.

How far can you go on an electric charge? *

With an electric golf cart it isn't about miles, it's about time. As in how long will a charge last.

    Answer, it depends.

As recommended, I always put ours on the charger after returning from any outing (unless I know I'm going right back out) so I never leave the house without a full charge. I can run all over Sun City (to the bank, grocery, restaurant, Sun Bowl, any rec center, etc) and be confident I won't get stranded because of "no juice".

    That's probably not helpful, sorry.

If you go to any golf course and ask for a "pull cart".....that's what you get. :victorious:

We have a gas golf cart that is only used for local errands or if one of our cars is in the shop. So many times our schedules conflict and it's nice to have the golf cart as a back-up. It is months between fill ups and the only other maintenance is to check the tire pressure. Because of the extreme heat the battery needs replacing every few years and with the electric cart there are several batteries.

Is that also true for car batteries in gas engines? What about electric cars...anyone know if the batteries need changing more often?

You also need to keep the water level in the battery high. It's not a major chore. I check the water level every 3 weeks or so.

Batteries in regular cars have to be replaced every 2-3 years.
Auto places charge a lot to replace battery.
My son replaced mine this year for under $100.
I think he got it at either Sams or Cosco.

How much does it cost yearly for your license plate? *If you have a gas golf car, do you need emmissions? Thanks.

We have a 1987 Yamaha gas engine and just paid $31 for 2 year's plate registration so a newer vehicle would still be far less than a car. There are no requirements for emission testing on golf carts.
