That's very odd. Remember how badly they wanted that particular location a few years ago and the ValleyView Foodbank was forced to relocate? Wonder what happened.

I have heard this rumor several times now but don't know if there is any substance. There was a fair amount of angst over them taking the space from the food bank so not sure if that comes into play.

We always assume readers know what we are talking about. Jan and Dean is a second hand resale store that also does estate sales. Their store has moved about and now their present location in Phase 1 is the store in question.

Anyone that attends the Sun Bowl shows just might be parking in Jan and Dean's parking lot.

Heard from someone who lives down there and chats it up with the various shop folks down there that the Lutheran Thrift Store will be moving in....
Also that the old Eve's Place has a kitchen set-up in it so it is being considered for a restaurant. I sure would like that as I wish every Rec Center would have a food place in it or nearby....

I agree re food place near rec centers. Especially Sun Dial.
There isn't any place to grab a quick bite between Bell and Grand or am I missing something.
Bobbies Cafe and 2 places near it are ok but not fast.

That empty former bank on 99th & Greenway would be perfect for a Fast Food. Great location.

There have been several restaurants in that Walgreens center... Chinese, pizza/bar... none could make a go of it.

IMO, I wouldn't hold out much hope for something a 99th & Greenway... to close to 99th/Bell and 99th/Thunderbird FF joints.

Restaurants in general are lacking in SC. The Royal Cafe, Nino's Mexican, JiMicheal's, Little Bite of Italy, JBs, Coco's, and a couple Chinese restaurants are the old-timers. Bobby's has changed hands and location, so while the name stands it's nothing much like the original. All have fairly average food albeit at reasonable prices. Almost everything else in SC is fast-food a la McDonalds, Arby's, Subway, Jack in the Box, DQ, KFC, etc.

Historic mainstays -- Furr's, New China, Coco's (Grand Ave), Lou's Tivoli, etc. have all folded or moved out of SC for a variety of reasons. They all were pretty average, too. One of these (which DW and I frequented 2-3 times a month for a good 10-years) told us "SC eaters want cheap meals even though the cost for food, labor, and rents continue to escalate. When we raise our prices they won't eat here. They think the 99-cent blue plate special still exists." That restaurant closed about 3-months later when their rent was raised to a level they couldn't afford. We miss it a lot.

For my tastes, above average restaurants are pretty sparse west of I-17. Glendale, Surprise and Litchfield Park have a few, but if you want respectable Mediterranean, Indian, Caribbean, Scandinavian, French, African, etc cuisine you will more than likely find yourself in Scottsdale, Tempe, Phoenix, Mesa, or Gilbert. When the wife and I want something a little special we buy a groupon discount coupon, get in the car and head east. We usually double or triple up on activities (eg, dinner + movie or a library or museum or concert) so we're not traveling just for dinner. But occasionally, it's nice to just enjoy a great meal and listen to their piano player/singer for the evening, too... [IMG]

You know all of the golf courses have light menus.

Probably a nice view for a cup of coffee too. One day.... It’s getting closer for me. One year to go.

I know. Seems as if I’ve been saying this forever. At least I have a house already.

The parking lot where bar/food & WVFB are going has always been crowded. Now it will be more so.
The lot where Lutheran is going is big.

Both those centers get a lot of traffic. Oddly though, almost anyone who has moved in has moved either on or out. Traffic doesn't necessarily mean sales.

If it's just the WVFB Thrift Store moving into the Lutheran Thrift Shop space there might not be such a traffic change. The food bank caused problems with the large trucks always parked in the lot and the large traffic jams when it was distribution days. The Lutheran Thrift Shop always has a lot of business and so much stock in their back storeroom that they can't get it out on the shelves. I think they will do very well in the move across the street.

Seems to me the Luteheran Thrift store has added and grown multiple times over the years. This should give them all the space they need and then some.

Glad to hear there will be a place to get eats down in that area. The way the old Jan and Deans is set up should work better for the Lutheran Thrift Shop since it won't have all those twists and turns so it will be easier for the staff to keep their eyes on the customers and will be easier for the customers with disabilities that need to shop from a wheelchair or walker.
Now I heard that foodbank store presently in Greenway is considering a move back to the area we've been speaking about. Hate to see something else leave Greenway--looking a little ghost-towny lately with Draper's and Damon's gone, Radio Shack, the real estate place etc.
