SCHOA...a once proud organization!

If you have followed any of the threads on here for the past years, i have been touting the Sun City Home Owners Organization as one of the truly good ones. In another thread i relived the history of rebuilding this organization in 2006. It was tumultuous and ugly at times, but we knew the importance of an organization that would work for the residents of Sun City.

When we rebuilt SCHOA, we were living hand to mouth. Money was always tight and we worked hard on budgets and focused on growing the membership. In one year, 2007, we increased the membership from around 7000 to 9500. It was a massive effort of outreach and promotion that paid off in spades.

It was always about compliance first, about the residents taking ownership of preserving the values and the value of living here.

Funny how that has changed of late. Now the partnership program appears to be their bread and butter. It brings in a lot of money, and while the service it renders is of value, how good is it if even one resident gets screwed by a contractor/business partner?

The good news for SCHOA is virtually no one pays attention to what they are doing. If they were, any number of questions would be asked. Simple ones like: How is the membership doing these days? How is the financial stability of the organization? Where in fact is all that revenue coming from that allowed them to pay cash for that wildly expensive remodel?

Heck, in fact, after getting that blow off letter from SCHOA today, i can absolutely guarantee i will be at the next board meeting asking these questions and more.

Here's the funny things about the above post...i already know the answers and will be more than willing to share them in the coming days and weeks.

Transparency is a beautiful thing eh gang?

Here's the real question for my friends on the board: Which of you reviewed my file and actually looked at what transpired? Or, did you simply have a knee jerk reaction to the executive directors suggestion to fix the vendor issue with a two strike clause? Because if it is the latter, it speaks volumes to what the direction this organization is taking.

I've spent countless hours trying to bring existing, new and potential owners to understand the value and the values of Sun City. We are and have always been a community that takes care of our own. SCHOA has led that fight from the early 60's. Unfortunately the letter i received yesterday was one that simply put the vendor first and the resident second. How is that right at any level?

Here's the reality: Over the past year we have paid Tru Builder $65,000 plus for a patio and a 500 square foot addition. When i was done with the second phase of work i had to hire a contractor to fix the mess he left us. His incomplete and shoddy work cost us $5000, and yet SCHOA thinks it is reasonable to allow him to continue to work in Sun City and recommend him. Worse yet, i provided SCHOA with another resident/member who had an identical story, but i guess they were too busy to talk to them. Again, it speaks volumes as to what and who matters to them.

If the residents/members of this organization don't come before a vendor program then SCHOA has truly lost sight of what should be the essence of their existence.

Dang IC, you must have deleted. Too bad, i always enjoyed your take on our community. Hope you start sharing again.

BTW, still waiting to hear which board members ever even saw the complaint i filed? Love to hear the logic of why it was ignored (and spare me the crap about a vendor needs two chances).

Bill, sorry to see you were let down by SCHOA's shortsightedness and lack of responsiveness. I haven't posted to this forum in a while, but I couldn't let this go. It's hard to fathom why any contractor would let $500 of dissatisfaction on a $65K job fester and create bad references. That's a terrible business tactic. It's equally hard to understand why the SCHOA failed to serve the needs of one of their biggest supporters. The fake news syndrome seems to be making truth, civility, and honesty passe in our culture. Sad.

I used to pay dues to the SCHOA but stopped when they refused to reveal who complained that I wasn't "trimming my shrubs 'correctly'." Who's to judge "correctness". I prefer my trees and shrubs trimmed to look natural, yet neat. Apparently one of my neighbors believes everything should be trimmed with the "hedge clipper" look -- everything shaped like a ball or rectangle and nothing taller than 4-feet.

Thanks IC, if it was only $500 i would not have wasted my time. The day after we did the walk through where we gave Tru Builder's supervisor a list of items we were challenging, we jack hammered out 500 sq feet of concrete that had been poured the year before. Our building permit had called for Tru Builder to raise the floor in the addition to meet the existing floor to conform to code. He didn't do it and it was cheaper to tear it out and pour concrete than it was to use self-leveling gypcrete. That was $3200 alone.

Max Christensen owns Tru Builder and he made a point of not dealing with me the last month. He always sent his supervisor. As i said earlier, when i signed off on the final, i had Julio sign off on the addendum of incomplete or unsatisfactory work. Later that day, we got an email from Max and he said his supervisor wasn't authorized to sign the addendum for him. Laughable.

Best of all though is once Max realized i would not use him to do the rest of the remodeling, the work got sloppy and he didn't want to do things we had under contract. He actually deleted language on interior painting from his proposal and claimed somehow his was different than ours. Simply dishonest.

Yet here we are with SCHOA still touting the fine job he does...or at least did on the executive directors remodel.

Great news eh? Just got my email and trapped between all the vendor promotions was the notice of the board meeting next Tuesday. Guess i will have to stop on by seeing as none of the board members have the intestinal fortitude to call or email me.
