Why should i donate?

By now, most folks now the Arizona Corporate Commission (ACC) stuck it to Sun City residents. This past week 4 of the 5 commissioners voted to consolidate the 5 waste water districts into one. The net effect is Sun City and Youngtown residents will subsidize the other 4 districts. Over the next 5 years our waste water rates will double while theirs will drop markedly.

The biggest question coming out of their action was whether the Sun City Home Owners Association (SCHOA) saw any hope in appealing their decision. As i understand it, SCHOA's board of directors met on Thursday to review their options and get a legal opinion on the potential for an appeal.

I wasn't in the room, nor have i talked to any of the directors, but in a blast email from the SCHOA's general manager they have decided to move forward.

The challenge is of course the matter of how to pay the legal fees. Best guess was the costs would be in the neighborhood of $60,000. SCHOA doesn't have that kind of money budgeted this year and so the only way to make this work is for the community to rally behind a fund raising effort. While it sounds daunting, it isn't. Sun City has 27,000 plus rooftops and 40,000 plus residents. Short of not being able to afford a small contribution, anyone living in Sun City has a vested interest in making a donation.

Let me be clear; you do not need to be a member of SCHOA to donate. And while it would be great if folks who can afford it write a bigger check, any contribution will be greatly appreciated. Every dollar will count and more importantly, people will feel like they are helping fight for what has made Sun City an incredible place to live.

This fund drive is just starting up and there are some details to work out. I know SCHOA now lets you pay the annual membership online at their website and it would be great if they could create the ability to donate on line via credit cards. For now: If you would like to support this fund raiser, please mail your check made out to SCHOA (indicating in the memo section: Utility Rate Cases Fund Raiser), to 10401 W Coggins Drive, Sun City, AZ 85351

I know at least a couple of the Board members follow this site and they should feel free to jump in and fill in the blanks i have missed.

We talked about this briefly in another thread and perhaps it is the best reason for anyone living in Sun City to donate. There has been considerable speculation the next "consolidation" case will make this one look like child's play. Water rates in outlying areas are even worse than the waste water issue.

Once again we see how builders bought land with no eye to the long term future. They made their short term profits, subsidized utility rates till sell out and then stuck the buyers with the real cost of delivering services. Now the ACC is looking to fix that on the backs of Sun City residents. EPCOR has freely admitted that's next on their agenda, though claiming they don't know the impact because they haven't done the studies.

You can ignore it and hope it all just goes away...but it won't. Within the next 5 years, our waste water bill alone will be higher than our combined water/waste water bill today. Then picture what happens when you double plus what our water bill is. Ugly.

Has SCHOA said what they will do with the donated money if they don't raise enough to start the suit?

Yesterday i gave a presentation at the SCHOA newcomers gathering and they said donations will be returned if the process doesn't move forward. The director told people should SCHOA pull the plug anyone wishing a refund simply come by their offices and make a request. To do that, obviously there need be record of a donation having been made.

That's good they are willing to refund. Personally I don't care about the refund, the cost of membership is so low, but sometimes when I have given for other contributions (not in SC) they have had a back-up project for the money. I'm sure SCHOA can use it for many items.
