An interesting quote from the May 15, 2017 55 Places Blog:

"Long gone are the days where 55+ communities are built around golf courses and act as the centerpiece amenity. Due to a falling interest in the sport as well as the lack of support from homeowners because of rising membership fees, more active adult communities are embracing green spaces as a way to get residents to connect with nature and spend more time outdoors. With more developers moving away from golf course designs in active adult communities and instead replacing them with open green spaces and outdoor recreational facilities, these newer communities are giving way to more inclusive amenities like gardens, parks, and extensive walking and biking trails to enhance the quality of life for its residents."

That would be a nice change for the original Sun City... more inclusive amenities.
Even in the non-retirement communities green space is king. Walking & biking trails are commonplace in new developments.

Interesting piece from 55 Places and exactly why i lament the passing of the Long Range Planning Committee. These kinds of questions belonged on the table (and in front of said committee) long before the commitment was made to shovel 40 million dollars at our golf courses. Making decisions in a vacuum is foolishness and the only measuring stick as to their wisdom will only be understood over the passing of time.

But let's be honest, we were built as a golfing community and any effort to move from that will be met with nothing short of hostility. Anyone buying on a golf course will most assuredly do everything in their power to keep the status quo.
The legal question looms even larger; would deed restrictions allow it to become greens space?

The point being, any decisions should be made for the long game and made based on facts, data and community involvement. That is simply impossible to do with an ever changing board of directors and a management team who sets the table with short term goals and no long range planning committee.

The GM argued when the committee was disbanded it was only there for people with an agenda. And of course some people in power see committees as a necessary evil who tend to slow down their attempts to get things done. Whatever the arguments for or against, Sun City's future will be far better served when we reinstate the LRPC with a process to make it work for the long haul, rather than the short run.

    Here's an idea.

Have golf courses be "golf courses" during certain hours.
And the remaining time be "walking courses".
Of course, signs should be posted.

No fee for walking, please. And no dogs, please.
