So what the heck is lawn bowls? Most folks moving to Sun City are clueless about this game called bowls (not balls). They are like two cereal bowls stuck together, one side having a slightly different shape than the other. That bias causes the bowl to turn as much as 10 to 12 feet (on really fast greens). Anyone familiar with putting on the side of a hill knows it is all about reading the break and then hitting it at the right speed/pace.

Lawn bowls is similar, only the bowl is rolled off your hand towards a jack or kitty (much like bocce). For those of you driving around Sun City you often see folks dressed in white playing the game. Anyway, there are 7 divisions of bowlers across the US and we belong in the South Central. The division is holding their annual yearly tournament starting tomorrow at the Bell greens and then moving to Lakeview on Sunday and Monday, back to Bell on Tuesday, Weds at Lakeview and finishing up at Bell on Thursday.

During those 6 days there will be 3 disciplines (triples, pairs and singles played) by some of the best lawn bowlers across the US and Canada. Anyone interested, stop by and take a look, it's pretty amazing what people can do with these nearly 4 lb. bowls.

BTW, the women are playing in Sun City West during this same time period.
