Being interested in the built environment I was thrilled to pick up a copy of Emil Fischer's "Churches of Sun City" at a garage sale. Arguably the churches here offer the most varied examples of architecture and there are some interesting buildings, and probably interiors too. Someday I am going to do a tour of all the churches and try and discover what the entire collection of stained glass looks like.

Which is you favorite church architecture in SC?

I have not thought of them in turns of "favorite." There is a certain similarity between a lot of them because I suspect that they were built within a couple of years of each other and architecture, like all fashions tend to look somewhat the same. How about you?

I haven’t studied many. I don’t live in SC yet so when I visit I don’t have much time to look around. I will though when I move there. I like SC architecture. I have passed by Lakeview United Methodist on Thunderbird a few times. It's unusual.

I also like Lakeview Methodist, it's where our drum circle meets, or at least used to meet, it has not gotten going yet in 2018. Not being a Christian I possibly view churches differently than you do.

Probably not. I’m a firm non-believer, although not raised that way. I don’t really like to say the word church. I have an uncomfortable time even going to a meeting in one when I have to. Negative childhood memories. But the buildings are interesting, regardless.

So do you think, given these realities (our not being 'people of the Book") Lakeview Methodist.jpeg Lakeview Methodist.jpeg Lakeview Methodist.jpeg , that Sunday is the day to go looking at churches? Here is what Lakeview Methodist looks like in the book I found.

Personally I would rather see them relatively empty so I would not go near them on a Sunday. Does that book discuss the architecture styles? Does it mention any of the architects? If not what is it about? Very nice drawings. I need to buy that as I enjoy sketching buildings.

It turns out that I inadvertently have two copies one of which I would be willing to trade for something of equal value, in this case being $1. A random look through the text suggests that it does indeed mention the architects responsible (or in some cases, irresponsible) for the buildings. There are no photographs but each building seems to have at least an external and an internal drawing. There does not seem to be any mention of architectural styles but at a glance I'd say that they all could be considered to be either some form of "Modern" or "Spanish Colonial." This has rekindled my interest in checking them out further. But not, I agree, on a Sunday.

I sent you a PM about the book. The inbox works very differently than the old inbox on here and I admit it was a bit confusing to use. I think you should get it though if you look in your inbox.

Most of SC architecture style is considered mid century modern, or MCM for short. Most churches I’ve seen I consider MCM except, you’re right, I have seen a few spanish colonial.

I didn't find a reply button on your last posting, but April is fine with me. That way you don't have to give your address out to strange men (not that strange) that you meet on the internet.

MCM. I will have to check that out. Will I find a wikipedia article on it? If not, let's write one.

Haha. Careful writing that one without historical knowledge. There are many MCM fanatics...I belong to a few groups.;)

Yes, like I said this new inbox is quite different. It starts a "conversation" and gives you several people to include. Then you need to exclude or include others. The old inbox was more like standard email. But, ok, I'll let you know in April.

This scan of the Lakeside Methodist church is pretty typical of the sort of discussion about the architecture that is in the book. The courtyard drawing is also a hint for another thread.

Thanks. The book looks interesting, regardless of a bit of writer hyperbole.
